Day 1

Day 1 was a long, but ultimately very enjoyable day. A little jaded from the overnight flight, we headed to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. This was a real eye-opener for the boys and provided them with a great insight into a key moment in South African history.

From there we transferred to Pretoria Boys High School for our first fixtures of the tour. We arrived early evening and were immediately struck by the wonderful grounds and endless sports pitches.

The U14s kicked off with a comprehensive 8-0 win against Pretoria Boys High U14s. The boys played some lovely hockey and Ollie Shelton rounded off the scoring with a fine drag-flick late on. The U15s then tested themselves against our hosts' U16s. In a very competitive game, Whitgift came out on top 2-1 with goals from Fin Hurst and Matt Blood.

Post match we headed up to the school's clubhouse where we were hosted superbly. The boys, and staff, were fed well with delicious food from the braai which cooked as we played earlier in the evening. Each boy was presented with a small gift from our hosts before being paired up and sent out with their host families for the evening.

A fantastic first day from both a hockey and cultural perspective. The boys will certainly have slept well with their hosts!
