Congratulations to Whitgift’s U19, U16 and U11 table tennis teams who did a brilliant job at the Jack Petchey London Schools' Team Championships (Zone Finals) at the weekend. The event was held at the University of East London.

The U19 team of James Smith, George Hazell, Reiss Vydelingum and Jason Kwok – a force to be reckoned with on the national circuit overcame Ernest Bevin College (7-1) and Morpeth School (8-0). The U11s - Ollie Maric-Murray, Jacky Lee, David Aboagye, Shantosh Thevarasa and Alfie Owen – came out on top as well. The foursome defeated Sir Thomas Abney Primary (5-3), Coldfall Primary (6-2), Fircroft Primary and Fox Primary (both 7-1). The U16 team of Angus Norman, Henry Maric-Murray, Mikaeel Toosy and Dylan Hung put in a valiant effort to reach the semi-finals.

The next step for the U19s and U11s is the National Zone Finals, in Bristol, next month. The U19s also have the 2018 International School Sport Federation (ISF) World Schools’ Table Tennis Championships to look forward to, in April, in Malta.

Mr Simon Beck, Whitgift’s Master in Charge of Table Tennis, commented, “Whitgift table tennis has been going tremendously well this year, under the expert coaching of Mr Goran Maric. The boys have trained hard and deserve all the success they have achieved. Hopes are high of the U19s retaining their national title, and it would be amazing for the U11s to join them and win our first ever U11 national table tennis title.”
