The new year heralded some great news for 16-year-old Whitgift footballer, Lucas Defise. It was announced that the Upper Fifth Form pupil has been selected for the Belgian U17 team ahead of the 2018 U17 Euro Championship.

Lucas joined Whitgift in Upper First Form, representing Whitgift football at A team level in every age group. He has been an instrumental part of the teams who have played and won the U13 and U15 Investec ISFA titles. After several years playing for AFC Wimbledon, he was signed to Chelsea FC Academy, in 2017.

His call-up to the Belgian squad means he will be travelling to Minsk, Belarus at the end of this month. The nations taking part in the competition, in addition to Belgium, are Belarus, Russia, Georgia, Poland, Japan, Lithuania and Ukraine.

Mr Andrew Martin, Whitgift’s Director of Football, commented, “Lucas is an exceptionally-talented footballer who, in the last few years, has coupled his technical ability with hard work and endeavour, to become an all-round footballer. Lucas’ international call-up is just reward for his inner belief and I am sure he will represent himself, his family and the School in a positive fashion.”

Whitgift wishes Lucas all the best for his first international experience.
