Day 4 - Ben Vaillant & Ben Fitzgerald

Day 4 - Fixtures vs Hamilton Boys

1st XV -

Thursday 30th July saw the Whitgift 1XV play Hamilton Boys High School year 13 leavers. Wilko’s Warriors kicked off their tour with a 38-21 win. For many of us we faced our first haka, a very humbling and exciting task laid down by Hamilton boys. Mr Wilkins tour motto of never take a backward step was forgotten as Joe Vajners first carry saw him run into a Maori brick wall and dropped flat on the floor. Some well worked team tries saw Whitgift shoot into the lead and at half time Wilko’s Warriors were getting stuck into the New Zealander’s.

The second half saw a refreshed Whitgift team come out of the blocks, with extremely strong defence and some very good basic skills Whitgift scored a couple more tries. A brace for Ade Coker and Tristan (on debut and scoring with his first touch of the ball). With 50 minutes down the bench came on and once again brought a new energy to the pitch. Some sloppy defence saw Hamilton run in 3 tries to make the game interesting. However the resilience of the boys showed through as we got the W. It was great to see the new boys in the team already making an impact in their first game of 1XV rugby.

2nd XV:

We were all set for a challenging game against a well structured kiwi side. The Haka then started proceedings which was a first for many of the boys. The boys were then all ready for there first game of the season.

The game didnt start in the best fashion for the two's seeing the first kick of the game sail over our heads to drop in the 5 metre channel, where we then defended our try line outstandingly for a long 20 minutes until unfortunately conceding. That then set the tone for the first half with the boys often having to defend in long spells in our own 22. However we did manage to get a few carries going along with an improved structure we looked to match them in the game. We then got close to scoring when the whistle was blown for the interval. The first half we defended well but were unable to advance up the pitch due to a huge penalty count But thankfully this was then sorted by the end of the half.

Moving into the second half the penalty count thankfully didnt increase and we began to get more of the ball and attack in phrases.
However HBHC were able to score off a scrum soon into the second half and then a further two soft runaway tries in the backline. Despite this the boys heads didnt drop still making big hits and progressing up the field for Liam Kerr to burst through a hole to score under the posts. This gave the boys something to cheer about after a good shift and an unlucky result.

The effort levels of the boys was brilliant and an honourable mention to Piero for picking up MOTM after a brilliant performance.
The two's can now only look forward to the next game against Lindersfarn where we hope to get our first W of the tour.
